Prerequisites

1)
You need broadband(external link) via DSL(external link), cable(external link) or Smart BRO wireless(external link), (not via satellite(external link)).
The modem (that is usually provided by your ISP(external link)) must be for Ethernet(external link) connection, not USB(external link) (if you plan to use a hardware phone or ATA).

The download and upload speed should ideally be
at least 256 kbps.
Each phone line uses up to 64 kbps download and 64 kbps upload. If there's not enough bandwidth, it will have a major impact on the sound quality.

Please ask your ISP what the download and upload speed can drop to under worst conditions. It can often be a big difference between what you pay for and what you actually get. And most of the time the upload speed is not even mentioned by the ISP's.
For instance when looking at PLDT's myDSL EXPERIENCE(external link), they say download speed "up to" 1 Mbps but they totally forget to specify the upload speed. You can't even find it in their FAQ pages.

2)
You need an ATA or a software phone like
X-Lite(external link).
Read more about ATA's on the page VoIP hardware
.

3)
When using an ATA, you also need a phone(external link)  ....any regular (modern) phone would do.
